Your guide to shooting off fireworks in Wichita: What’s allowed, where to report violations

You can start buying and using Fourth of July fireworks in Wichita on Monday, June 27.

But you can’t shoot off just any kind of fireworks in Wichita. Here’s what you need to know – and who to call if you think someone is setting off fireworks they shouldn’t.

When can you shoot them off?

The city of Wichita will allow fireworks to be shot off and sold from 10 a.m.-midnight June 27-July 5.

What’s allowed

People in Wichita can shoot off any fireworks they buy at fireworks tents within city limits. The Wichita Fire Department has tested and approved dozens of fireworks from two wholesalers, Wholesale Fireworks and Waz Up.

What’s not allowed

You can’t shoot off bottle rockets or M80s in Kansas.

In Wichita, the sale or use of fireworks labeled “shooting flaming balls” is not permitted. Firework sparks higher than six feet are also not permitted.

Violations of the city ordinance can result in a $250 ticket plus court costs. Adults can be cited for juveniles who violate the city ordinances.

How to report possible violations

Sedgwick County Emergency Communications has a non-emergency line that anyone can call to report excess noise or the illegal use of fireworks. The line, at 316-290-1011, will be available from 6 p.m.-3 a.m. July 1-July 5. It is for situations that do not pose a threat to life or property.

How to use fireworks safely

The Office of the State Fire Marshal in Kansas recommends having a water supply nearby, lighting only one firework at a time, lighting from a solid, flat and stable platform and only lighting fireworks outdoors. More tips can be found on their website.

What to do when you’re done

Wichita Fire Battalion Chief Jose Ocadiz said residents should take care to properly dispose of fireworks. Fireworks need to be wet down and cooled before being thrown away.
