With limited access to doctors and social service agencies, DeSoto County families lack consistent prenatal care and parenting education. First 1,000 Days Suncoast hopes to change that.

First 1,000 Days Suncoast will expand into DeSoto County, where more than 80 families made a 50-plus mile drive in 2021 to deliver their babies.

The Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, which provides support for families and babies through the First 1,000 Days Suncoast initiative, is seeking to enhance its impact. DeSoto was a natural first stop: With few doctors and limited social service agencies, families in DeSoto lack consistent access to prenatal care and parenting education to enhance childhood development.

“Empowering parents to be their child’s first teacher as well as encouraging parents to become community leaders is a priority for the initiative,” said Tina Wilson, a bilingual nurse responsible for working directly with families to navigate care.

The expansion is funded through a three-year, $130,000 grant from Elsa and Peter Soderberg Charitable Foundation. The initiative follows a “no wrong door approach” designed so that any person can connect to the services they need.

“You have families in DeSoto who have lived here for generations,” said Lauri Benson, Social Services Director for DeSoto County. “We know each other, look out for one another, and with a new program like First 1,000 Days, spreading the word within neighborhood circles is key.”

Families with pregnant mothers or who are raising young children can learn more about First 1,000 Days Suncoast through the website, First1000DaysSuncoast.com. There is a contact form allowing parents and caregivers to connect directly to the family navigator to get assistance. Families can also sign up for free text messages with parenting tips based on the ages and developmental needs of their children.
