First 2022 snowstorm for Beaver County brings up to 1.5" of snow, causes roadway restrictions

After a tame entrance into the winter season, Beaver County saw the first snowstorm of the year on Thursday.

The first snowstorm of the season arrived in Beaver County Thursday night, causing the region to be blanketed in a thin layer of snow. While not enough to cause major disruptions, the heavy storm did cause traffic delays and temporary restrictions across the area.

According to National Weather Service reports, northern Beaver County only saw around 1 inch of snow during Thursday night's storm. Farther south, in areas such as Aliquippa, Ambridge and Hopewell Township, snow accumulated around 1.5 inches by 10 a.m. Friday.

While schools were still starting on time Friday morning, various restrictions were placed on roads throughout the night to protect drivers. Reduced speeds were enforced on roads such as Interstate 376 by 10 p.m. Thursday, with road crews working quickly to keep the majority of snow and ice off of major roadways.

Forecasts call for a sunny Saturday morning for Beaver County, but snowstorms may be possible into the evening. After 8 p.m., that snow will turn into freezing rain and cause some possible hazards for drivers around the region.

Sunday morning will feature more of the cold rains and heavy winds upwards of 20 miles per hour in some areas of the county. Once the sun goes down, snow will be possible for a few hours throughout the night. This chance for snow will continue into Monday morning, but temperatures will begin to rise above 40 degrees again later in the week.
