An Urbandale couple rested Sunday after they welcomed the first baby born in Des Moines in 2022.
Matthew Hickcox, 30, and Olivia Novak, 25, welcomed their daughter Elenora Dawn into the world at 4:12 a.m. Jan. 1 at UnityPoint Health Des Moines. She weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces and was 20.25 inches long. She is their first child.
Novak and Hickcox are both managers at Des Moines area Hy-Vee stores. They planned to get married in October, but "she just couldn't fit into the wedding dress," Hickcox said. "So we're going to wait a little bit."
Both Novak and the baby were healthy and everything went smoothly after a labor that lasted for about 10 hours. Their first day-and-a-half of parenthood was great, they said — full of "a lot of love," while being both exciting and exhausting, Hickcox said.
"We were surprised with all of it because her due date was on the first," Hickcox said. "So she decided to make her appearance on the first."
During the pregnancy, Novak, who eats a vegan diet, had cravings for vegan doughnuts. The only business in the Des Moines area that sells vegan doughnuts is the Whole Foods in West Des Moines, Hickcox said.
"Whenever she wanted that craving the most was when they were closed," Hickcox said.
