First day of school is around the corner. Fort Walton Beach High teachers are preparing
FORT WALTON BEACH — Students across Okaloosa County will be saying goodbye to the summer break and hello to the new school year when they return to classes next Wednesday, Aug. 10.
At Fort Walton Beach High School on Tuesday morning, students were picking up their schedules while teachers and student volunteers were readying classrooms for some 1,670 students who will walk the school's freshly polished hallways.
In preparation for the first day of school, Fort Walton Beach High School Principal John Spolski said the school will have its "Day at the Fort" event Friday.

"We’ll bring in all of our new students; both freshmen and also all of our sophomores, juniors and seniors that have moved into the area," Spolski said. "We try to get them all a little more familiar with the halls and the layout, bathrooms and cafeteria."
New students will learn about the school, tour the campus, hear some of the Vikings' chants and spirit songs and engage in some bonding activities with the help of some of the Viking mentors.
The bell will ring at 7 a.m., but for seniors, the day will start a little earlier with the traditional senior group photo in front of the school.
