'If at First You Don't Succeed...': Weather Balloon Bursts on First Launch Attempt in High Winds

The National Weather Service shared footage of an incident filmed on January 13 in Glasgow, Montana, to illustrate some of the challenges they face when trying to collect weather data.

The video shows a meteorologist needing two attempts to launch a weather balloon in winds of up to 67 mph. On his first try, the balloon bursts. On the second, the balloon launches, but is dragged along by the wind.

The radiosonde it was carrying “hit the ground multiple times, but somehow did not fail,” the service said.

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again,” they wrote on Twitter. Credit: NWS Glasgow via Storyful
