First-ever mongoose lemur born at Jacksonville Zoo: A ray of hope for endangered species

The adorable newcomer, born to mother Olivia and father Ignacio, has brought a glimmer of hope to the conservation community.

This remarkable event marks the third successful birth for mother Olivia, who was previously residing at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. However, it is a momentous occasion for Father Ignacio as this is his first experience as a parent. The family is currently relishing their quality time behind the scenes, allowing the newborn to grow and thrive under their watchful care.
Adding to the excitement, Olivia has also recently become a grandmother to a rare set of twins, born earlier this spring at the esteemed Saint Louis Zoo.
These new additions are a testament to the dedication and expertise of the zookeepers and staff who work tirelessly to ensure the well-being and conservation of these magnificent creatures.

As a proud member of the Madagascar Fauna & Flora Group, the Jacksonville Zoo actively supports the organization’s conservation actions, research initiatives, and environmental education programs in Madagascar. Furthermore, the Zoo is among the distinguished 16 institutions affiliated with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) that collaborate to safeguard the Mongoose lemur population, which currently stands at approximately 60 individuals.
The Zoo invites visitors to share in the excitement of this momentous occasion and hopes that the arrival of the baby mongoose lemur will inspire individuals to take action in protecting and conserving the world’s wildlife.
