First frost advisory for September issued for Sioux Falls area Wednesday

Areas along the eastern border of South Dakota, including Minnehaha County, will be under a frost advisory for a portion of Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.

Temperatures will drop as low as 32 degrees, and the advisory is expected to last from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Wednesday, the service stated on its website.

The service warned the frost could kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if plants are covered. It's the first frost advisory of September for the year. Temperatures are not expected to dip below 40 degrees for the rest of the week, according to the service's seven-day outlook.

What areas of South Dakota will be affected by the frost advisory?

Areas include portions of northwest and west central Iowa, southwest Minnesota, northeast Nebraska and east central and southeast South Dakota, NWS started. More specifically, that includes:

  • Madison

  • Orland

  • Flandreau

  • Sioux Falls

  • Canton

  • Lennox

  • Tea

  • Harrisburg

  • North Sioux City

How typical is it to have frost in September in South Dakota?

Going back to 2005, the NWS of Sioux Falls has issued a total of 11 frost advisories for the month of September, including the one set for Wednesday morning.

And the earliest frost to occur in Sioux Falls was Aug. 11, 1902, according to NWS. The average time frame for frost is Sept. 22, and the latest time for frost in the Sioux Falls area was Oct. 16, 2021, the service stated.
