First homes on Fort Myers Beach receive power again Saturday, more than two weeks after Ian

A few homes on Fort Myers Beach had power Saturday after the final structural and electrical inspections were completed.

It's been more than two weeks since deadly Hurricane Ian plowed into the Southwest Florida coast, and there has been no power or sewage service on the island since.

Fort Myers Beach was one of the hardest hit areas, with storm surge levels reaching 15 feet above typical sea levels.

The Town of Fort Myers Beach says repairs to the main power line along Estero Boulevard are 96% complete, with 85% of side street complete.

Florida Power & Light installed 47 new street lights, according to a press release from the town.

Hurricane Ian hit the Lee County coast on the afternoon of Sept. 28, bringing 140 miles per hour winds and deadly storm surge.

Much of Fort Myers Beach was wiped out, and many residents remained on the island during and in the days after the storm.
