The First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden made a stop at Pittsburgh International Airport Tuesday afternoon as part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s ‘Investing In America Workforce Hubs’ initiative.

Pittsburgh International Airport was a crucial backdrop for the First Lady’s visit because Pittsburgh International Airport is one of just five nationwide workforce hubs including Columbus, Baltimore, Phoenix and Augusta.

We also heard from Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, Acting secretary of Labor, Julie Su, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey.

Mayor Gainey leads the Workforce Hub, which is focused on training programs for students interested in jobs in climate and energy sustainability - manufacturing and internet infrastructure like broadband.

Dr. Jill Biden says these apprenticeship programs will train our future workforce while helping invest in critical infrastructure that is badly needed in our region. Dr. Jill Biden says she’s working with Mayor Ed Gainey to create new careers.

“For most people, a high school diploma isn’t enough to find a career,” Dr. Jill Biden said. “Students can take colleges courses or pre-apprenticeship programs and they can work toward an associate degree.”

The Biden administration says the new terminal at PIT will attract new business to stay or relocate to Pittsburgh while creating:

  • $2.5 billion in economic activity

  • More than $14-thousand in direct and indirect jobs

  • More than $6-thousand in temporary design and construction jobs

  • More than $65-hundred temporary spin off jobs
