A first look at Cillian Murphy's new movie, Small Things Like These, has been released.

Based on Claire Keegan's best-selling book of the same name, the film will shed a light on Ireland's Magdalene laundries – horrific asylums run by Roman Catholic institutions from the 1820s to 1996.

"Small Things Like These takes place over Christmas in 1985, when devoted father and coal merchant Bill Furlong (Murphy) discovers startling secrets kept by the convent in his town, along with some shocking truths of his own," reads the official synopsis for the film.

Along with the newly released image, it has been confirmed that the movie will premiere at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival – which begins on February 15.

Directed by The Responder's Tim Mielants and written by Enda Walsh, the blockbuster also stars Game of Thrones' Michelle Fairley, Eileen Walsh and Emily Watson. Murphy reunites with Mielants for the project, after previously working together on season three of Peaky Blinders.

The Oppenheimer star also acts as producer for the film, alongside Alan Moloney and Catherine Magee. Matt Damon and Drew Vinton will also produce, with Ben Affleck, Kevin Halloran and Michael Joe serving as executive producers.

"With Small Things Like These, Tim Mielants tells the story of a man of few words, with wide open eyes, as clear as the skies of Ireland," said Carlo Chatrian, artistic director of the Berlin International Film Festival.

"In The Quiet Girl we already had sense of Claire Keegan's skill in portraying small, apparently simple characters and making them unforgettable; here her delicate, rich and yet down-to-earth writing finds a great interpreter in Cillian Murphy."

He added: "We are confident that this story that allies the kindness to be directed to the more fragile, and the willpower to stand up against injustice, will resonate with everyone.

"We are looking forward to launching this 'quiet' yet quite exceptional film at the star of Zeitgeist Irland 24, a year-long celebration of Irish culture in Germany."

It's a busy time for Murphy, who recently won a Golden Globe for his performance in Christopher Nolan's biopic. The actor has also been nominated for a BAFTA and SAG Award.

Small Things Like These will premiere at The Berlin Film Festival, starting February 15. Oppenheimer is available to rent or buy now from Prime Video, iTunes, Microsoft Store and more.
