Our First Look at The Crown's Margaret Thatcher Does Not Disappoint

From Harper's BAZAAR

  • Gillian Anderson made her first appearance portraying Margaret Thatcher in The Crown while filming the show's fourth season earlier this month.

  • The British actress was photographed on set in full costume, including a voluminous wig, blue skirt and blouse, and pumps.

The first full trailer for The Crown's third season has just arrived, but production for Season 4 is already underway. Fans might've already seen early glimpses of the cast filming the series' forthcoming episodes, especially snapshots of breakout star Emma Corrin as Princess Diana, but now another long-awaited historical figure has made her debut in costume: Margaret Thatcher.

The X-Files and Sex Education star Gillian Anderson stars as the Iron Lady, a spot-on casting decision that was confirmed in September. Earlier this month, she was photographed on a replica ship set in full wardrobe and makeup, mimicking the former prime minister's signature look. Anderson sported a cobalt-blue skirt and blouse, oversized sunglasses, pearl earrings, and brooch-accented navy pumps. Her sizable wig topped off the fantastically '80s ensemble.

Anderson's Thatcher won't be in Season 3; she's set to make an appearance in Season 4, which means we can look forward to seeing her share the screen with Olivia Colman (Queen Elizabeth II) in the months after the next installment of the show is released.

"I am so excited to be joining the cast and crew of The Crown and to have the opportunity to portray such a complicated and controversial woman," Anderson said in a statement last month. "Thatcher was undoubtedly formidable but I am relishing exploring beneath the surface and, dare I say, falling in love with the icon who, whether loved or despised, defined an era."

The Crown's third season is set to premiere on November 17—watch a trailer below. The fourth season starring Anderson likely won't debut until 2020.
