Joanne Froggatt features as a frontline doctor in new photos for Jed Mercurio's upcoming COVID-19 drama Breathtaking.

The ITV series is adapted from writer and NHS doctor Rachel Clarke's memoir of health workers navigating the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Liar star Froggatt plays Acute Medicine Consultant Dr Abbey Henderson, a doctor who is also mother of two. She finds herself faced with an unprecedented situation as the severity of the pandemic becomes apparent.

The new photos show Abbey at work wearing protective equipment including a surgical mask, apron and plastic face shield.

Mercurio and The Crown star Prasanna Puwanarajah, who themselves are both former doctors, have penned the project with Clarke. Craig Viveiros, who previously worked with Froggatt on Angela Black, directs.

As filming wrapped on the project, Downton Abbey star Froggatt shared her excitement to be involved in the "incredible" three-part series, which is slated to air in 2024.

"I feel truly honoured to be playing Dr Abbey Henderson in Breathtaking, based on Dr Rachel Clarke's beautifully written, poignant and shocking book of the same name," she said in a statement.

"When I first read the incredible scripts they moved me to tears on many occasions. I felt so passionately that I had to be a part of telling this story, the real story, of what was really happening behind the closed doors of the hospitals during the pandemic."

She continued: "Our NHS staff are nothing less than absolute heroes in my eyes, and I hope telling this story goes a little way towards us understanding their truth, their lived experience and honouring their unbelievable commitment and sacrifice on behalf of us all."

The series is also set to star Game of Thrones' George Georgiou, Dodger star Lucy Montgomery, Wednesday's Georgia Goodman, and Official Secrets' Jodie McNee.

Writer, novelist, and director Mercurio is best known for his work on smash hit television series including Line of Duty, Bodyguard, and medical drama Bodies.

Breathtaking does not yet have an official release date. The book of the same name by Dr Rachel Clarke is available to purchase now.
