The Responder season two first-look images have given fans a glimpse of Martin Freeman as he reprises his role.

The BBC One drama follows police officer Chris Carson (Freeman), who has been demoted from his role as inspector and is tasked to take on the night beat in Liverpool city centre. The trauma-stricken and morally dubious cop is joined by partner Rachel Hargreaves (Adelayo Adedayo), an inexperienced officer with an idealistic view of the police system.

First airing in 2022, the series became an instant hit with viewers. It was nominated for six BAFTA Awards and won the International Emmy Award.

The Tony Schumacher drama has been confirmed for a second series, with images showing Freeman and Adedayo returning to their roles, as well as Josh Finan and Emily Fairn, who starred as Marco and Casey respectively.

The synopsis for the season reveals that it will pick up six months after the events of season one, with Carson attempting to rebuild his life.

It continues: "[Carson] is trying to be a better police officer, a better man, and most importantly, a better father to his daughter Tilly. All whilst still dealing with the relentless trauma of being a night response officer. Chris wants a day job. Chris needs a day job. But is he prepared to risk everything to get one?

"Rachel Hargreaves is putting her life back together too. She's still fuming at the way Chris broke her dreams of being a police officer and dragged her down with him into the dirt, and now she's desperately trying to take control of a life and a career that sometimes feels like it's slipping away.

"But after working with a succession of 'normal' coppers, Rachel is starting to realise she's got more in common with Chris than she'd ever want to admit. As they are sucked back together, and into the night, they must pull each other back into the light. But then a routine stop on a black Range Rover changes everything, and suddenly, the darkness beckons once again."

Speaking to Digital Spy, Okafor has teased what will happen to her character DI Deborah Barnes in the upcoming episodes.

"In series two, my character is really different to what she was in the first series," she said. "I've got a much more juicy storyline and a lot more to do. It's to the point where I was like: 'Shit, how am I going to connect her to who she was in the first series?'"

The Responder season one is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
