First NY woman-owned marijuana dispensary opens in Queens: ‘I applaud them’

The state’s first woman-owned cannabis dispensary opened for business in Queens on Thursday as part of New York’s goal of equity in weed licensing.

Good Grades Dispensary opened its doors at 162-03 Jamaica Ave. in Jamaica, paving the way for women and entrepreneurs with marijuana-related convictions to cash in on what is expected to be a lucrative and growing industry.

The store is supported by the state’s Social Equity Cannabis Investment Fund, and kicked off with well wishes from Gov. Hochul.

“With the opening of Good Grades in Queens, we’re continuing to build on our progress to create a safe, regulated cannabis industry in New York,” Hochul said in a statement. “New York is working to support entrepreneurs and ensure that consumers can purchase safe, legal products while supporting their communities.”

The business is operated by entrepreneur Extasy James, 26, and her cousin, Michael James, 34, a Jamaica, Queens native and an attorney who focuses on serving clients with a core value of advocating for the minority business community.

“I am honored to be the first woman-owned adult use cannabis dispensary in New York,” James said. I’m a second generation Jamaican immigrant, and the promise of generational wealth is not just about money but it’s about family solidarity and community impact.”

“What we hope to do with this dispensary is to combat the war on drugs,” her cousin Michael said. " The harm that it has caused in this community specifically. Although this is a family affair, we would not be here without the many people and the support that has helped us get to this day.”

The pop-up will run for at least 30 days and then afterwards the store will temporarily shut down for final construction before reopening again permanently later this year.

James said she will use the money she makes to support her 6-year-old daughter and to build generational wealth for her family.

She said a dozen people will work at the family business.

Good Grades also got a shout out from Queens Borough President Donovan Richards.

“What better way to celebrate women’s history month than to see the first woman owner of a dispensary right here in Queens,” Richards said.

“What was once a tool used to target communities of color is now a crucial and legal piece of our economic puzzle that will create jobs, create wealth, create opportunities in the same communities. When I came in I was so proud to see young people who look like me who are leading in these efforts.”

Richards was James’ first customer. He use a $100 bill to buy $72.30 worth of gummies and let the shop keep the change.

Customer Peter Simicic, 37, said he was glad to see a dispensary closer to where he lives.

“I know there were others in Manhattan so it’s great to see one in Queens,” said Simicic, who lives in Flushing. “Being in Queens going to Manhattan wasn’t ideal but now that there’s one in Queens and all over, it’s great. It’s super easy, super convenient.”

Earl Jones liked the location, too.

“This is a good thing for me. I just moved back to Queens,” he said. “I’m right around the corner. It’s great a lot of these are opening up.”

Jones said he was glad to see equity among entrepreneurs.

“I’m glad it’s a black female owner,” he said. “They taking care of business so I applaud them. This is a good thing.”
