First OHSAA girls wrestling state tournament to be held at Schottenstein Center
The experience of competing at the Schottenstein Center is the stuff of legend for Ohio's high school wrestlers.
From the parade of champions to the simultaneous competition of the three divisions, all on a platform that captures the attention of the thousands of fans in attendance, it's an environment that the wrestlers dream of competing in.
And beginning in 2023, Ohio's female wrestlers will be competing for the same opportunity.
Since girls wrestling was recognized as a full-fledged sport by the Ohio High School Athletic Association in January, the OHSAA has been looking for a location for the state tournament, which was previously put on by the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association.
On Monday, the OHSAA announced that the girls wrestling tournament will be held alongside the boys tournament at the Schottenstein Center.
"We are very excited for the girls to wrestle in the same environment at the Schottenstein Center that the boys do," OHSAA executive director Doug Ute said in a statement. "We have been working through the logistics of having both state tournaments held alongside each other at the Schott and we are pleased that it can be done. The excitement and energy will be incredible."
The OHSAA is still working to update the daily tournament schedule after adding the single-division girls tournament, but the tournament will retain its three-day, double-elimination format for both boys and girls. The 2023 tournament is set for March 10-12.
