First-place Rays vs. Red Sox: Shane McClanahan on the mound

Hard-throwing rookie lefty Shane McClanahan will be on the mound for the Rays tonight as they seek to complete a three-game sweep of the Red Sox.

In beating the Sox on Saturday, the Rays vaulted past them and into the first place in the American League East, their first time alone on top since late June.

Tonight’s game will mark the Rays’ first appearance on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball since 2014, and their first from Tropicana Field since 2011.

Boston is starting right-hander Nick Pivetta, who has dominated the Rays in two starts this season.

Also Sunday:

• Lefty reliever Jeffrey Springs is hoping to return sometime this season after spraining his right knee trying to field a bunt Saturday. He will be shut down for 10-14 days and then reevaluated. Right-hander DJ Johnson, acquired Friday from Cleveland, was called up to take his place.

• The Rays were hoping Chris Archer would throw five innings/75 pitches tonight for Triple-A Durham in his fifth rehab outing, but he was removed from the game after one inning (31 pitches, three runs) due to left hip soreness. The team said he couldn’t get his footing on the mound, so it was precautionary.

• Reliever Collin McHugh (arm fatigue) said his first bullpen session on Sunday went well and he hopes his return time from here is short. He plans to be on the next road trip that starts Friday in Baltimore but acknowledged the team will decide when he’s ready to be active.
