The center, with an in-patient department of 600 square meters (6,500 square feet), will be part of the Okhmadyt hospital after the repair and restoration of specialized premises for orthotics and prosthetics, ergotherapy and physiotherapy.

The facility will provide care for patients with various types of injuries and pathologies, including children with burn injuries, amputations, recovering after major surgery, etc. Over 190 units of required medical and rehabilitation equipment will be purchased for the project.

The Okhmadyt hospital is currently treating children from the territories liberated from Russian occupation, many of whom have mine, shrapnel and bullet wounds. They all need long-term rehabilitation and must be under constant professional supervision. However, its present rehabilitation department does not have the conditions for keeping these children in the hospital.

This greatly complicates rehabilitation, reduces its duration and effectiveness, with no conditions to provide much of modern rehabilitation practices.

Rehabilitation therapists can only care about children who are staying in other in-patient departments of the hospital, as for now. Otherwise, children have to come to the hospital for treatment daily. However, this is very difficult for most children and their parents, as they are often not from Kyiv. The creation of the specialized children's rehabilitation center will thus make the whole process more effective and comfortable for clients.

Thousands of Ukrainian children need professional rehabilitation today, according to expert estimates. The center will be able to provide help to more than 3,000 of children in a year, including up to 300 who will undergo rehabilitation in a full-fledged inpatient facility.

The newest children's rehabilitation center may set an example for other Ukrainian health care facilities to expand their premises in order to provide specialized care especially demanded in wartime.

Lviv Defence Cluster and Okhmadyt children's cancer hospital have announced the launch of the fundraising campaign within the Children of War project. They need about UAH 40 million ($1.1 million), including UAH25 million ($670,000) to purchase medical equipment and UAH 15 million ($410,000) for repair and building work.
