Fire engulfs Cheney car dealership on Monday

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A fire damaged a Cheney car dealership on Monday.

According to Cheney Fire Chief Jerry Peitz, at 5:52 p.m., they arrived on the scene of a fire at Lubbers Cars.

Peitz says the fire was under control by 6:18 p.m. It is believed the cause of the fire was due to a spark from a welder or cutting torch. No injuries were reported.

Billy Lubbers tells KSN News the fire started in the Ford service area, and customer vehicles were inside at the time. He expects them to be totaled.

“We had five customer vehicles in the service aisle at the time, and one was particularly hit pretty hard. It was by where the fire actually started, where it was burning pretty hot,” Lubbers said. “The rest of, I’m sure, suffered smoke damage, which pretty much is pretty bad for any car.”

Two people injured in crash on McLean

Lubbers says they have moved everyone to the Chevy building, which was not involved in the fire.

“Since we have two different service departments, we’re combining working together. Our sales floors have combined on the Chevy showroom, so we all know each other pretty well, but I kinda look at this as a team-building exercise,” he added.

The fire temporarily blocked traffic on Main Street from the Dollar General to the Farmers Coop fuel pumps. Main Street has since been reopened.
