First series of Lincoln Beach redevelopment meeting to be held in New Orleans East

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Happening Tuesday, Jan. 23, New Orleans officials will host the first Lincoln Beach Redevelopment Master Plan Community Milestone meeting.

Plans to redevelop the beach have been released and officials are asking for the public’s input.

“For the success of this project, it is essential to have diverse participation and solicit valuable community input from all constituents throughout the city and the metropolitan area,” said City of New Orleans officials.

During the first meeting, officials and residents will create the goals and guiding principles to be used in the initial set of interviews, inventory and analysis mapping.

New Orleans East residents have been advocating for the reopening of Lincoln Beach since Hurricane Katrina, and for the past five years, there has been a bigger push for the process to begin.

In November 2023, city leaders signed a contract with Sasaki Associates, Inc. to complete the redevelopment work.

At that meeting, Mayor LaToya Cantrell gave an explanation of what the new space would consist of.

“The newly redeveloped Lincoln Beach will provide equitable access to an open green space, and family-friendly recreational activities and will reconnect our people to nature while developing an appreciation for our local ecosystems and biodiversity,” said Cantrell.

Residents are reminded that the beach is currently closed due to the presence of alligators, venomous snakes and poisonous flora and that any gatherings are prohibited.

The public will have two chances to attend a meeting. The meetings will be held at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church at 8181 Lake Forest Blvd. with the first happening at 8 a.m. and the second at 6 p.m.

Anyone looking to attend must register on the Lincoln Beach NOLA website.
