First snow of the season expected to hit Akron Tuesday

Snow-lovers, rejoice: Snow might begin falling in Northeast Ohio as early as this week.

The National Weather Service is predicting a 60% chance of precipitation in the Akron area Tuesday night with a low of 28 degrees.

With a cold front moving through the area, the precipitation will likely start as rain that turns into lake-effect snow later that night, the NSW said.

Snow is expected to continue into Wednesday as well, mixing with rain after 11 a.m. before eventually tapering off as temperatures rise.

The weather service said 1-2 inches of snow is possible for the traditional snowbelt by Wednesday.

The first freeze of the season is also expected this week, with a low of 28 degrees on Monday.

The sudden cold snap is a jolt from the above-average temperatures reaching into the 70s last week.

While it may seem early for snow, NWS records show the earliest recorded snowfall in the Akron area was on Oct. 2, 1974.

Meanwhile, the first freeze is coming late this year: The average freeze date for the Akron area is October 19.

How to prepare

As freezing temperatures return, the NWS offers the following recommendations should you lose power in your house or apartment:

  • Close off unneeded rooms to avoid wasting heat.

  • Stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors.

  • Close blinds or curtains to keep in some heat.

  • Eat and drink. Food provides the body with energy for producing its own heat. Drinks lots of water and other non-caffeinated, non-alcholohic drinks to prevent dehydration. Cold air is very dry.

  • Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Remove layers to avoid overheating, perspiration and subsequent chill.
