First taste of winter driving as snow hits southern Quebec Wednesday

Snowfall warnings and special weather statements have been issued across parts of southern Quebec, with early winter-like weather threatening 5-10+ cm of snow through Wednesday. Since this will be the first accumulating snowfall of the season for many areas, drivers are being urged to adapt to the changing conditions. More on the timing and impacts, below.

Wednesday: First snow over southern Quebec threatens commute times

Snow picked up through the early morning hours Wednesday across southern Quebec, including across the Montreal area. It will continue to be persistent throughout the afternoon, before easy during the evening hours.

"Be prepared to adapt your driving to changing road conditions," says Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) in a special weather statement issued for the city of Montreal. "There could be significant impacts on rush-hour traffic in urban areas."

Farther east in Quebec City, the heaviest snow is expected through the afternoon on Wednesday. Moderate northeasterly winds will also accompany the snow, which will cause reduced visibilities locally.

In all, between 5-10 cm of snow is expected for Montreal, with closer to 10 cm in Quebec City. Higher amounts between 10-20 cm are possible across the Eastern Townships.

Colder than seasonal temperatures are expected to continue into next week.
