The first trailer for critically acclaimed queer horror movie I Saw the TV Glow has been released.

The new movie, which stars Dungeons & Dragons' Justice Smith and Atypical's Brigette Lundy-Paine, focuses on two teenagers who bond over their shared love of a TV show – though reality starts to blur when the show is cancelled.

"I know this sounds crazy, I don’t want to alarm you – do you remember a TV show we used to watch together…" Lundy-Paine's character Maddy tells Smith's Owen, before it flashes back to their childhood bonding over The Pink Opaque.

"Sometimes The Pink Opaque feels more real than real life," Maddy adds, as the teenage Owen says it was just a TV show. "Are you sure that's all it was?" Maddy replies.

The two also discuss their sexuality, as Maddy reveals an attraction to women, while Owen says: "I think that I like TV shows."

Things then start to get surreal, however, as Owen declares that "Maddy disappeared without a trace… all they found was her TV set burning in the backyard".

"What if I really was someone else, very far away on the other side of a television screen," Owen later adds.

I Saw the TV Glow, which comes from writer and director Jane Schoenbrun and counts Emma Stone as a producer, has attracted an impressive 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

GQ described the movie as "an exquisitely surreal piece that defies easy genre categorization", while The Guardian called it "a buzzy, brilliant new film".

"It’s rare that a film attempting to tell a trans story – whether on purpose or accidentally – has any success," added Little White Lies. "I Saw The TV Glow reaches even higher, and assuredly hits its mark."

Screen International added: "Though occasionally strained in its attempt to be a future cult classic, this surreal, unnerving portrait of two teenagers brought together by a powerfully seductive young-adult series has ambition to burn and a riveting sense of style."

I Saw the TV Glow is set to be released in US cinemas on May 3. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
