Fisherman rescues 8 newborn puppies tossed off Louisiana bridge, cops say

St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies have arrested a man after police said he threw eight puppies in a bag off a bridge.

On Sunday, deputies got an animal cruelty complaint and said a witness reported seeing someone driving a white truck stop at a bridge and throw a bag into the water, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page. The bag contained eight newborn black Labrador puppies.

Mac Kennedy, a fisherman, saw the bag thrown off the bridge, according to KLFY.

“I heard whining and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, something’s in the bag,’” he told the outlet.

Kennedy fed the puppies and kept them warm, KLFY reported. They were then taken to Michelle Youngberg, a foster dog mom and secretary and treasurer for Every Paw Animal Rescue. Youngberg is now taking care of them.

Police arrested Gary James Goulas, 55, of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, and charged him with aggravated cruelty to animals, according to the post.

He was booked into St. Martin Parish Correctional Center and police said his bail hasn’t been set, according to the post.

Video surveillance caught Goulas allegedly driving away from the scene in his truck, KADN reported.
