Fisherman spots elusive pink creature swimming off Louisiana. ‘Like I just saw Bigfoot’

A man out fishing with his girlfriend captured video of an elusive creature in the waters off Louisiana.

“We were both freaking out,” Thurman Gustin told McClatchy News. “We were like, ‘Oh my god, it’s so pretty.’”

Gustin was fishing off Hackberry on July 12 when he spotted the animal out of the corner of his eye.

He kept watching the water and saw a pink dolphin swimming.

“Like I just saw Bigfoot,” he said. “I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a pink dolphin.”

Gustin said he saw another, smaller pink dolphin swimming nearby, though he didn’t get the second one on video.

Later that night he decided to post the video on Facebook.

“And it just blew up,” he said.

Commenters started asking if the dolphin was Pinky, a pink dolphin that’s been spotted numerous times in the area since 2007, according to WGNO.

In 2019, Fox 5 DC reported that Pinky had been spotted with a calf.

Dolphins can appear pink when they lack melanin, a pigment that gives color to hair, skin and eyes, a marine mammal biologist told KHOU in 2017. The biologist said the pink dolphin spotted off Louisiana is likely an albino.

Amazon river dolphins are also pink, but they are found only in freshwater in South America, according to the World Wildlife Fund.

For Gustin, seeing the elusive dolphin was something deeply personal. After going through a difficult time in his life, he took it as a good omen, and he’s glad to share the joy with others.

“It’s like a sign going, ‘OK, you’re doing great,’” he said. “I’m just happy that happy’s going around.”
