A “trainee” fishmonger has been sacked after a video emerged which appeared to show him smashing frozen seafood on a pavement.

In the footage, a man is seen slamming seafood onto the floor while outside Moon Fish in east London, in an apparent attempt to break it up before returning it to the store.

A man filming the incident is heard saying: "Look at that. Moon Fish - that is what he does with your meat. Breaks it up on the floor.

"That's going in your bellies, ladies and gentlemen."

Barking and Dagenham council responded online after the video was shared widely and confirmed its food hygiene team was investigating.

“We are aware of a video circulating on social media appearing to show a local business engaging in unhygienic food practices,” the council said in a message on X.

“Our food hygiene team are aware and are currently investigating the matter urgently. They have been in contact with the business.”

The council later confirmed that Moon Fish had told them the "trainee" had been dismissed.

LBC News reported a staff member as saying it was the man’s “first day”.

'Considering further action'

A Barking and Dagenham council spokesperson told Yahoo News: "We had already been made aware of the video and had acted on it immediately due to the potential food safety risks involved.

"We have contacted the operator, who advised that it was the employee’s first day and was a trainee.

"He has now been removed from the shop and the affected fish has been discarded.

"Officers will be carrying out a full inspection of the premises imminently."

The council later confirmed to Yahoo that it was “considering further action” after inspecting Moon Fish.

“Following an inspection, the business owner has been instructed to comply with several legal requirements, most of which need to be in place immediately," it added.

How to find out a store's food rating

Food businesses are required to display their rating so customers can easily see it.

If you want to know the hygiene rating of a food establishment in the UK, you can also easily check it on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website.

Search for the food place by its name and location, and you'll see its hygiene rating along with a summary of the inspection report.

You can also use the FSA's mobile app to find hygiene ratings of food businesses.

The hygiene ratings in the UK range from 0 to 5 and are based on how well a food business follows food hygiene and safety regulations.

A rating of 5 is the highest, while a 0 means the business needs to make urgent improvements.

The ratings show how clean and safe the food is, including how it's handled, prepared, cooked, reheated, and cooled.
