Five candidates competing for Chula Vista City Council District 3

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Five candidates are running to represent Chula Vista City Council’s District 3 in the March 5 primary election.

David Alcaraz, Michael Inzunza, Daniel D. Rice-Vazquez, Christos Korgan and Leticia Munguia are all vying to replace District 3 Councilmember Alonso Gonzalez. Gonzalez, who was nominated by fellow councilmembers after a controversial selection process last January, is expected to be in the role until December following former Councilmember Stephen Padilla’s election to the state Senate in November 2022.

District 3 covers the southeast section of Chula Vista.

Who are the candidates?

David Alcaraz

Alcaraz is a local business owner who offers home care for vulnerable residents. He has over 20 years of experience building small businesses in Chula Vista. His top priority is public safety, ensuring law enforcement has the “necessary resources and technology to effectively safeguard the safety of our neighborhood and family.” Find out more about Alcaraz’s views on his website.

Michael Inzunza

Inzunza currently serves as Chula Vista Commissioner and works for the California School Boards Association representing school districts in the region. His top priority is making sure neighborhoods are safe for families. Inzunza claims he will “hire more police officers and firefighters to improve response times and work directly with Chula Vista Police to stop home break-ins.” His endorsements include Congressman Juan Vargas, Padilla, former County Supervisor Greg Cox and former Chula Vista Police Chief David Bejarano. Christos Korgan

Korgan is currently the chair of Chula Vista’s Sustainability Commission. He also serves as board director of Keiller Leadership Academy and president of his HOA within Windingwalk in Otay Ranch. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that his priorities include “the advance of Chula Vista’s economic development initiatives, promote local control and public safety and advance the city’s goal of seeding a university.” Find out more about Korgan on his website.

Leticia Munguia

Munguia is currently the human resources manager at Sweetwater Authority. Her priorities include “safer neighborhoods, greater transparency and accountability, more parks and recreation spaces, housing that’s affordable and support for first time home buyers.” Her endorsements include San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chair Nora Vargas, Councilmember Jose Preciado, former Chula Vista Mayor and Assemblymember Mary Casillas Salas and Democratic Congresswoman Grace Napolitano. Daniel D. Rice-Vazquez

Rice-Vazquez is a businessman and Marine Corps veteran.
