Five deaths, 297 new COVID-19 cases on Cape and Islands

There were 7,952 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Massachusetts, increasing the total number of cases to 1,838,163 since the pandemic began, the state Department of Public Health reported on Thursday.

In their weekly report, state officials also noted 844 new probable cases of coronavirus for a statewide total of 167,087.

As of Aug. 25, 182 patients were primarily hospitalized with COVID-19-related illnesses and 587 total patients hospitalized with COVID-19, the state agency reported.

Sixty-seven patients were in intensive care units, or ICUs, and 29 patients were intubated.

Closer to home, in Thursday's weekly report, state health officials said Barnstable County posted 261 new coronavirus cases, for a total of 42,818 since the pandemic started in March 2020. Dukes County (Martha's Vineyard) reported 16 new coronavirus cases, for a to-date total of 4,070. Nantucket County reported 20 new cases, for a total of 3,703.

Case numbers are higher than last week’s report, which showed 239 new cases on the Cape and Islands. Nantucket County had a spike in cases, reporting 20 new cases in the past week.

The state’s 14-day positivity rate was 7.82%. The 14-day positivity rate for Barnstable County came in at 8.37%, and 4.55% for Dukes and Nantucket counties.

Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis was treating 11 patients with coronavirus, one of whom was in the ICU. Falmouth Hospital reported eight patients, with no patients in the ICU. Martha’s Vineyard Hospital had no patients. Nantucket Cottage Hospital had three patients being treated for coronavirus.

State health officials said Thursday there were 38 new deaths statewide among people with confirmed cases of COVID-19, increasing the total deaths to 20,063 since the pandemic began.

There were 10 deaths statewide from probable cases of COVID-19. The total number of deaths from probable cases is 1,317 in Massachusetts.

Barnstable County posted five new deaths, the state agency reported. The total probable and confirmed deaths from COVID-19 is 638 in Barnstable County. There were no new deaths in Dukes and Nantucket counties combined, for a total fatality count of 20 since the pandemic began in March 2020.

The two-week COVID-19 case count, total case count and 14-day testing positivity rate (Truro was lowest at 0%) for Cape Cod towns follows:

Barnstable (124; 11,028; 10.07%); Bourne (48; 4,082; 9.18%); Brewster (16; 1,674; 4.24%); Chatham (19; 997; 13.29%); Dennis (26; 2,668; 8.41%); Eastham (less than five; 576; 1.68%); Falmouth (76; 5,303; 7.45%); Harwich (22; 2,408; 7.84%); Mashpee (28; 2,968; 6.06%); Orleans (13; 889; 7.87%): Provincetown (five; 476; 8.33%); Sandwich (32; 4,044; 6.89%); Truro (0; 197; 0%); Wellfleet (less than five; 317; 6.25%) and Yarmouth (63; 5,191; 11.51%).
