Seven free, low-cost events to celebrate Black History Month in Bucks County

Colleges, museums and other entities throughout Bucks County are offering a plethora of events in celebration of Black History Month.

The range of events span gospel renditions, history lessons and a session on the history of voting rights in America. Some events are free, while others are charging a nominal fee.

Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things exhibit

The African American Museum in Bucks County is offering a pair of exhibits during February. One display will feature the Civil Rights Movement, highlighting important figures and events from the 1950s and 1960s through present day. The second display will focus on the hidden figures of Bucks County.

Bucks County Courthouse Administration Building, 55 Court St., Doylestown, and Bucks County Justice Center, 100 N. Main St., Doylestown. Free.

From Slavery to Freedom

Baritone Keith Spencer will join pianist Peter Hilliard to perform Spirituals such as “Go Down, Moses,” “Walk Together Children” and “Steal Away.”

"The concert," said Spencer, "shares the significance and influence of the Bible on people who had so little else to hold on to."

'Who Am I' in-school Pop-up Exhibit

The African American Museum of Bucks County will host a two-day presentation of its exhibit, which features six stations, each representing a different era of American history. Teachers will be given "prework" featuring a short bio of some African Americans included in the exhibit to engage students in the classroom before visiting the stations. The program is designed for students in 5th through 9th grades.

Centuries of Distorted Maps

Kevin Antoine, Bucks County Community College's Associate Vice President of Community and Government Relations and Chief Diversity Officer, will lead a discussion analyzing the 400 years of incorrect mapmaking that depict Northern Hemisphere continents as much larger than they are, and the African content as much smaller than it is.

Tales of the Tuskegee Airmen

World War II Pilot and Tuskegee Airmen Class 45A member Dr. Eugene J. Richardson, Jr. flew protection and cover missions over Germany in WWII, only to face racism in the airforce and at home. Richardson, a native of Camden, NJ, will share his story of endurance and perseverance.

Thursday, Feb. 16 at 12:30 p.m., Doylestown Presbyterian Church, 127 East Court St., Doylestown. $10.

Battle at the Ballot Box

Bucks County NAACP vice president John Jordan will discuss the history of voting rights in America, through former president Barack Obama's ascension to present-day attacks on voting rights.

Tuesday, February 21 at 11:30 a.m., The Epstein Campus at Lower Bucks, 1304 Veterans Highway, Bristol. Free.

The Evolution of Black History Month

The PairUP Society has partnered with local educators across Bucks County to explore the origins of Black History Month and why it is celebrated. This interactive and educational event is free, family-friendly and open to all ages.

Sunday, Feb. 26 from 4 to 6 p.m., 7th Street Studios, 21B N. 7th St., Perkasie. Free.
