Five Lafayette schools recognized for beating pre-COVID test scores

Five Lafayette Parish School System schools were named 2022 Comeback Campuses by the Louisiana Department of Education, indicating the schools' test scores are above their pre-pandemic levels, according to a release from LPSS.

Broussard Middle School, Early College Academy, Edward J. Sam Accelerated School of Lafayette, Lafayette Middle School and Myrtle Place Elementary School were five of the 41 schools across the state to receive the designation. The schools have increased the percentage of students scoring mastery or higher on the statewide English Language Arts and math assessments and lowered the percentage of students that scored unsatisfactory compared to 2019. High school campuses with the designation also increase their ACT scores.

“Our leaders, educators, students, and families faced many challenges over the course of the last few years, and have overcome many obstacles to learning," said LPSS Superintendent Irma Trosclair in a release. "This prestigious honor recognizes the positive impact educators have made with our students, despite many interruptions to normal teaching and learning opportunities. I am proud of each school community for receiving this prestigious honor.”

Each of the schools that received the designation will be visited by an LDOE leadership team member in January to honor and celebrate the students' and employees' success and to learn about what's going on in the classroom, LPSS said in a release. LDOE said the schools will also get recognition on Louisiana School Finder and an official banner.

Louisiana Comeback was an initiative launched by LDOE to help school systems develop a plan to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and multiple destructive hurricanes that impacted schools across the state. As part of the program, LDOE asked school districts to commit a portion of their pandemic relief funding to attendance and well-being, recovery and acceleration, and professional learning.

School districts also submitted comprehensive "comeback plans" outlining how they would continue recovering from the pandemic.

“Louisiana’s students are coming back stronger, and this movement is being led by students, families, and educators,” said State Superintendent Cade Brumley in a release. “I look forward to visiting these campuses to recognize their progress and learn how we can accelerate further growth for the children of this state.”
