Five local basketball teams win first-round games in state tournament

Five area basketball teams opened the state tournament with victories on Tuesday night.

Reese Widerburg finished with 26 points and four assists, Dominik Contreras had 15 points and six rebounds, Marcos Ramirez had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists, and EJ Gomez added seven points to lead fifth-seeded Oxnard to a 72-46 home victory over 12th-seeded Narbonne in a CIF-State Division II regional first-round game.

The Yellowjackets (30-3) became just the sixth boys basketball team in Ventura County history to reach 30 wins in a season. Oxnard went 32-3 in the 2019-20 season.

Oxnard, which reached the CIF-Southern Section Division 2AA semifinals to qualify for state, will play at fourth-seeded La Mirada in a regional quarterfinal Thursday night.

Daniel Ortiz scored 25 points, Luke Ortiz had 19 points, six rebounds and two blocks, Zane Carter finished with 10 points and five rebounds, Josh Ullegue had eight points, five rebounds and five assists, and Colin Guenther added five points and five assists to lead eighth-seeded Buena to a 72-66 home win over ninth-seeded Del Norte in a CIF-State Division III regional first-round game for its first victory in the state tournament in program history.

The Bulldogs (28-5), who reached the CIF-SS Division 3AA semifinals to qualify for state, will play at top-seeded La Jolla Country Day in a regional quarterfinal Thursday night.

Camarillo overcame a slow start on the road to earn a 67-61 upset over fifth-seeded San Diego High in a CIF-State Division III regional first-round game.

The 12th-seeded Scorpions trailed 14-1 to start the game, but quickly rebounded to take a 17-16 lead after the first quarter. Camarillo (20-13), which reached the CIF-SS Division 3AA semifinals to qualify for state, will play at fourth-seeded Oakwood in Hollywood in a regional quarterfinal Thursday night.

Dylan Benner finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds, Mathew Wilson scored 14 points, and Nico Macias had 10 points, five rebounds and five assists to lead St. Bonaventure to a 69-43 home victory over 14th-seeded Eagle Rock in a CIF-State Division IV regional first-round game.

The third-seeded Seraphs (24-9), who reached the CIF-SS Division 4AA championship game last Saturday, will host sixth-seeded Victory Christian Academy of San Diego in a regional quarterfinal Thursday night.

Thirteenth-seeded Santa Paula lost 65-62 on the road to fourth-seeded South Gate in a CIF-State Division V regional first-round game. The Cardinals, who reached the CIF-SS Division 5A title game last Saturday for the program's first appearance in a sectional final, ended the season 13-11.

Three days after winning the CIF-SS Division 5A championship, the Oak Park girls team opened the CIF-State Division III regional playoffs with a 71-60 win at sixth-seeded Tehachapi.

Freshman Delaney White scored 30 points, junior Lindsay Gould hit three 3-pointers and finished with 15 points, Ella Broms had nine points, and Joely Chadwick and Ella Shmool each added six points for the 11th-seeded Eagles.

Oak Park will play at third-seeded Cathedral Catholic of San Diego in a regional quarterfinal Thursday night.
