No matter what you think of running back Ezekiel Elliott’s declining production over the last three seasons, there is no diminishing the impact he had since the Cowboys being picked him fourth overall in 2016.

With two NFL rushing titles, three trips to the Pro Bowl and one first-team All-Pro season, Elliott leaves the Cowboys as the third best running back in franchise history behind Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett.

He will leave third all-time in rushing yards (8,262), rushing touchdowns (68) and total touchdowns (80) behind those two as well.

Elliott’s career in the NFL is certainly not over. He will play for another team in 2023.

Ezekiel Elliott jumps in the kettle

Never has a touchdown celebration and an NFL fine been so universally loved.

On Dec. 18, 2016, Elliott scored a 2-yard touchdown in a 26-20 victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers He ran into end zone and jumped into the Salvation Army’s iconic red kettle behind the goal post to the delight of everyone in attendance and watching on television. It spawned more donations to the Salvation Army and more future celebrations of Cowboys jumping the red kettle. It happened twice in 2022. Elliott started it all.

The 2016 Pittsburgh walkoff

Ezekiel Elliott took the league by storm as a rookie as an impact performer. He put all of his skills on display in a 35-30 victory at the Pittsburgh Steelers as the Cowboys won for the sixth straight time.

Elliott rushed 209 total yards and three touchdowns, including a 83-yard catch-and-run score when he showed his speed on a screen pass and a 32-yard game-winning score in the final seconds of the comeback road victory

Sending message to Kam Chancellor and NFL

Ezekiel Elliott made his presence felt before his rookie year got started by sending a message to league in the third preseason game of his rookie year against the Seattle Seahawks and their ‘Legion of Boom’ defense.

Elliott displayed his speed around the edge and his quickness between. Most importantly, he showed his toughness and physicality by going at Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor, known as one of the league’s most feared and hardest hitters, and winning several head-on collisions.

The rookie was not be messed with.

Ezekiel Elliott is the offspring of two athletic parents. His father played football at Missouri as a linebacker but he got his speed and quickness from his mother, a college hurdler.

Elliott won the state championship as a hurdler in high school and he brought his perfect form to the NFL by embarrassing defenders who tried to go low on him to avoid his physicality.

He embarrassed the Bears and Eagles with hurdles over players for extra yards as a rookie in 2016 and he had a nice one at Baltimore in 2020.

Elliott captures second rushing title, stars in playoffs

One season after serving a six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, Elliott bounced back in 2018 to win league rushing title for the second time with 1,434 yards. He also become the first running back since 2003 to lead the the team in receptions with 77 catches. He had 152 rushing yards against Detroit and 151 against the Eagles, marking the third- and fourth-best performances of his career.

He capped the season with 137 yards and a touchdown in a wildcard playoff victory against the Seahawks.
