There are five named storms churning in the Atlantic, just the second time that’s ever happened

There are five named tropical systems at the same time in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean, an occurrence that has happened only once before in recorded history — almost 50 years ago.

Hurricane Sally, Hurricane Paulette, Tropical Depression Renee, Tropical Storm Teddy and Tropical Storm Vicky are all currently in the Atlantic, and there are two other disturbances being watched by the National Hurricane Center.

The last time there were five named storms simultaneously was in 1971, said Colorado State University scientist Philip Klotzbach.

“It’s the peak of the season. It’s been pretty active and now everything is just forming at once,” Klotzbach explained.
