Five Palm Springs Unified schools are getting a facelift. Here's what to know

Five Palm Springs Unified schools are in line for upgrades after the board of education approved various amendments to contract for modernization projects across the district.

The board of education voted Tuesday to amend the lease-leaseback contracts previously awarded by the board to West Coast Air Conditioning Company, Inc. and Bernards, Inc. for preliminary services across five PSUSD campus sites.

Cathedral City High School

What the amendment aims to do: The amendment to this modernization project aims to acquire heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment from West Coast Air Conditioning Company earlier, given the time limits associated with accessing Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funding. The amendment also includes the cost of exploratory trenching to confirm the exact location of underground utilities.

Cost of equipment (including general conditions, bonds, insurance, etc.) is $2,029,073.43.

An additional amendment will be added to provide for the guaranteed maximum price for the project cost upon approval of plans and specifications by the Division of State Architect for the project.

What was decided Tuesday: The board voted unanimously in favor of the amendment.

Della S. Lindley Elementary School

What the amendment aims to do: Acquire heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment sooner from West Coast Air Conditioning Company, given industry-wide wait times for receiving equipment.

Cost of equipment (including general conditions, bonds, insurance, etc.) is $855,841.64.

Once approval of plans and specifications by the Division of State Architect for the Della S. Lindley Elementary Modernization project are conducted, an additional amendment will be added to provide for the guaranteed maximum price for the project cost.

What was decided Tuesday: The board decided to unanimously vote in favor of the amendment.

James Workman Middle School

What the amendment aims to do: Amend the lease lease-back contract previously awarded by the board to Bernards Inc. concerning preliminary services for the James Workman Middle School modernization project. Phase 1 of this project will consist of constructing a new classroom building and site improvements.

The cost of Phase 1 (including general conditions, bonds, insurance, etc.) totals $22,013,437.

The guaranteed maximum price for the project cost will be provided in an additional amendment upon approval of plans and specifications by the Division of State Architect for the project.

What was decided Tuesday: The amendment was unanimously voted in favor of by the board.

Landau Elementary School

What the amendment aims to do: Provide eight new portable classrooms that will temporarily be placed at Landau Elementary School in preparation for its modernization project.

The cost for the temporary classrooms (including general conditions, bonds, insurance, etc.) is $3,043,710.00.

The Guaranteed Maximum Price for the total project cost will be provided in an additional amendment once the Division of State Architect approves plans and specifications for the project.

What was decided Tuesday: The board of education voted unanimously to approve the amendment.

Sunny Sands Elementary School

What the amendment aims to do: Amend the lease-lease back contract between the district and Bernards Inc. to temporarily place 10 new portable classrooms and six relocated portables at Sunny Sands Elementary School in preparation for its modernization project.

The temporary housing cost (including general conditions, bonds, insurance, etc.) is $4,128,204.00.

Once the Division of State Architect for the Sunny Sands Elementary School Modernization project approves plans and specifications, an additional amendment will be provided for the Guaranteed Maximum Price for the total project cost.

What was decided Tuesday: In a unanimous vote, the board approved the amendment.
