Five with Polk County ties will interview for opening on Florida Supreme Court

Five judges with connections to Polk County are among 15 nominees scheduled to be interviewed to fill a vacancy on the Florida Supreme Court. The Florida Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission certified the candidates for the opening created by the retirement of Justice Ricky Polston.

All of the nominees will be interviewed May 3 in Orlando.

The candidates include Victoria J. Avalon, an assistant state attorney for the 10th Judicial Circuit, based in Bartow, along with four judges with the Sixth District Court of Appeal in Lakeland.

They are Joshua Aaron Mize, Meredith Sasso, Jared Edward Smith and John K. Stargel. Stargel is a former state legislator from Lakeland.
