The first Associated Press high school football rankings of the season have been released.

Someone should have called Ida coach Jeff Potter to get his opinion.

Potter's team has played three state-ranked and undefeated teams in the first three weeks of the season and is getting ready to take on another.

The Blue Streaks opened against Airport which is ranked No. 10 in Division 4, took on a Whiteford team that drew the top spot in Division 8, then faced Clinton which is No. 2 in Division 6.

“All three teams are very good,” Potter said.

If that wasn’t enough, Ida goes on the road to face defending state champion Hudson, ranked third in Division 7, Friday night.

“We knew going in that it would be a tough schedule,” Potter said. “They guys are good. They still have the mindset that we’re going to go and win Friday.”

The Blue Streaks knew they were scheduling two quality non-league opponents in Ida and Whiteford. It was just bad luck that they faced two Lenawee County Athletic Association heavyweights early.

“It just happened that our first two league opponents were Clinton and Hudson,” Potter said. “Airport has a good group this year and Whiteford is very strong.”

Potter looks at it philosophically.

“You’ve got to play them sometime,” he said. “It will make us stronger later in the year.”

Ida will need to be strong late in the year.

The final game on its regular-season schedule is against is the annual showdown against Dundee. The Vikings are ranked 12th in Division 5.

Five Monroe County Region teams are ranked in the first poll of the season.

In addition to Whiteford, Airport, and Dundee, Gibraltar Carlson is ninth in Division 3 and Erie Mason 16th in Division 7.
