After five straight home games, the Rogers High baseball team finally vied in a road game

The Rogers High baseball team got a good start to its four-game road trip as it defeated the Times 2 Academy/Paul Cuffee School co-op 9-1 on Tuesday. The Vikings now have won four of their last five Division-II games.

The Portsmouth High softball team earned its second win of the season, and the competition-starved Tiverton softball squad finally met its match in Division-III as it lost a pitcher’s duel to the Shea/Tolman co-op squad.

The other local coaches who emailed results to sports@newportri.com all reported losses for their squads. But at least some of their players will receive recognition.

Rogers High School's Shane Marshall follows through on a swing in a recent game against Central Falls. On Tuesday, Marshall stroked a double, single and drove home two runs to help the Vikings to a 9-1 win over the Times2 Academy/Paul Cuffee School co-op team.

Robby Dufault and Shane Marshall, Rogers baseball

Dufault took care of the pitching and – led by Marshall – the offense got rolling too as the Vikings downed Times 2 Academy/Paul Cuffee School 9-1 on Tuesday in Providence.

Dufault hurled five innings and allowed two hits and a run while striking out 11. He helped his own cause with a hit, RBI and a run. Marshall cracked a double, single, drove in two runs and scored two and Matt Lynch had two singles and an RBI. Rogers climbed to 6-2 in the Division-III standings while playing the first of four straight road games.

Noah Leys and Evan Agren, Middletown baseball

Middletown suffered the first-inning blues again as it fell behind early and couldn’t recover in an 8-2 setback to host Johnston on Tuesday night. The Panthers scored three first-inning runs and got four more in the third inning to take control and drop the Islanders Division-II record to 5-3.

Leys was perfect on the night with a double, single, two walks and two runs. Freshman Agren had two hits and the lone Middletown RBIs.

Mary Rainey and Gracie Keyes, Portsmouth softball

Portsmouth stifled host West Warwick’s four-run, last-inning rally and escaped with a 6-5 win on Tuesday. Rainey pitched a complete game and allowed just four hits while striking out five. Keyes had two hits and Kaelyn Mahoney launched a home run as the Patriots improved to 2-4 in Division-II.

Abby DeMello, Tiverton softball

After six straight mercy-rule wins, Tiverton finally met its match in Division-III as the visiting Shea/Tolman co-op squad earned a 2-1 victory on Tuesday.

Tiverton’s DeMello and Shea/Tolman’s Janayah Gordon got locked in a pitcher’s duel with DeMello allowing three hits and striking out 12 and Gordon allowing one hit and fanning 13. Abbie Monkevicz had the lone Tiverton hit which delivered Devin Bordner with a run in the first inning.

Robert Mairs and Dean Russolino, Portsmouth boys lacrosse

Portsmouth’s second-half rally came up short as visiting North Kingstown held on for a 12-9 triumph on Tuesday. Mairs and freshman Russolino each had two goals and two assists. Shane Temple, Will Howard and Indy Pacheco had a goal and assist apiece and Joey Levreault made 12 saves as Portsmouth dipped to 1-6 in Division-I.

Nadia Corey and Angellina Ponte, Rogers girls lacrosse

After a 12-day waiting period between games, the Vikings dropped a 16-10 decision to Bay View Academy on Tuesday at Braga Park. Ponte led the offense with four goals and Corey was outstanding in net with 16 saves for Rogers.

Josh Guillemette, Tiverton boys tennis

Guillemette earned the lone Tiverton point as the host Tigers bowed to East Greenwich 6-1 on Tuesday. Guillemette scored a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles but couldn’t keep Tiverton from dropping its second Division-II match in seven contests.

“Josh served really well and attacked the net to put points away,” Tiverton coach Bill Phillips said.
