Five things to do in the fall in Hendersonville, including Farm Fun Day and Halloween Bash

With fall here and Halloween just a few days away, here is a list of things to do in the Hendersonville area in the final weeks of October and also the beginning of November.

Farm Fun Day at Historic Johnson Farm

Historic Johnson Farm will be hosting a Farm Fun Day from 1-5 p.m. Oct. 21.

Admission is $20 per family of up to four people of any age. If a family has more than four people, each additional member is $5. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

According to a news release, everything during the event is included in admission. Children can make a number of crafts and participate in a farm-wide scavenger hunt. All visitors can take a wagon ride. The historic farmhouse will be open for self-guided tours. The Heritage Weavers & Fiber Artists as well as Caregivers of Mother Earth will lead activities and talk about their organizations. Each person can get a bag of popcorn and a drink with their admission.

At 1:15 p.m., members of the Walker Family will gift the Johnson Brothers' 1923 Model T back to the farm after being away for over 35 years. This historic vehicle will be on display, and visitors will be able to ask questions of the Walkers.

At 7 p.m. on Nov. 10, rail enthusiast Bo Brown will be the guest speaker for the Saluda Historic Depot’s monthly Train Tales.

Brown, who is the current national vice president of the Railroadiana Collectors Association, will be speaking on “Remembering the Railroad Porters and Their Vital Role," according to a news release.

An avid railroad memorabilia collector, he started collecting his railroad antiques when he was 12 years old. His grandfather who worked for Southern Railway for more than 40 years, gave him a Southern “shorty” lantern, a long neck oiler and a silver Southern thermos. That began a lifetime pursuit of collecting Southern Railway.

When not on the trail of another relic, he spends a great deal of time helping families in his community as the owner of The Howze Mortuary in Travelers Rest, S.C. He is on the advisory board of the Bank of Travelers Rest, is the current vice president of the Carolina Heritage Railroad Association and works with his local Historical Society.
