Five things to know about reported Jaguars WR coach Chad Hall

The Jacksonville Jaguars have reportedly filled their vacant wide receivers coach position, hiring former Bills WR coach Chad Hall to replace Chris Jackson, who left shortly following the season to join Texas in the same role.

Hall, 36, is the first to be added to the Jaguars' coaching staff following a 9-8 regular-season finish which saw Jacksonville win the AFC South and advance to the divisional round of the playoffs.

Hall spent five years in the league as a receiver, playing for the Eagles, 49ers and Chiefs.

Hall briefly played for the Jaguars in 2014 during the team's offseason program but was waived only 10 days later, signing on Aug. 6, 2014.

Since his playing days, Hall has coached as an offensive assistant with the Bills (2017-18) and as a receivers coach (2019-22) for the club.

Here are five things to know about Hall, the expected receivers coach of the Jaguars:

Chad Hall's connection with Pederson dates back to playing days

While Hall did not play in the NFL with Pederson, he did play for teams that Pederson was a part of as a coach.

In 2010, Hall was signed to a three-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, ultimately playing for the franchise from 2010-12 as an undrafted free agent.

While there, Pederson was with the team as an offensive quality control coach (2010) and the team's quarterbacks coach (2011-12).

After his contract was up in 2012, Hall joined Pederson and former Eagles head coach Andy Reid in Kansas City for a season while Pederson was the team's offensive coordinator.

Hall attended Air Force Academy, played as a running back, quarterback

Though he was initially recruited to play quarterback out of Wesleyan School (Peachtree Corners, Ga) for the United States Air Force Academy, Hall converted to the running back position following his freshman season.

He played three seasons, ultimately not seeing the field his first year.

Hall played receiver in addition to RB and as a return specialist during his senior season, earning him the MWC Offensive Player of the Year honor in 2007. He was also First-team All-MWC in 2007.

Hall was the only player in the country that led his team in rushing and receiving during his senior season.

During his senior season, Hall rushed for 1,478 yards and 15 touchdowns, while he caught 50 passes for 524 yards and one TD.

Hall served in the United States Air Force as a second lieutenant from 2008-09 after he graduated from the academy. He was based at Hill Air Force Base in Utah as an aircraft maintenance officer.

He led a squadron of about 300 people near the end of his term.

Hall was highly respected by receivers in Buffalo, coached Zay Jones

During his time in Buffalo as the team's receivers coach, Hall saw WR Stefon Diggs rise to All-Pro status.

Since joining the Bills in 2020, Diggs has caught at least 100 passes in each season with the club. He led the league in receptions in 2020 with 127, along with receiving yards with 1,535 yards.

During a press conference in 2021, Diggs said that he "would never want to lose [Hall]. I don't what I would do if I didn't have Chad with me."

He laster called Hall, "one of if not the best coach" he's ever had due to the way he prepares receivers mentally, taking the "thinking out of it," and allowing receivers to play fast.

His relationships with players have given players a reason to respect him. Hall described himself as "relationship-driven" in a recent interview with WKBW in Buffalo.

“Chad just lets me be me and play to my strengths and he's a guy you just want to play for,” Bills receiver Gabe Davis said via WKBW. “He has his players' backs 100 percent, right or wrong, and that's the kind of guy you want.”

Since entering the league in 2020, Davis has accounted for 118 receptions for 1,984 yards and 20 touchdowns in 30 starts. He posted his best season in 2022, catching 48 passes for 836 yards and seven touchdowns.

Hall coached Jaguars receiver Zay Jones briefly in 2019 while Hall was the team's WR coach, but was with the receiver as an offensive assistant coach during Jones' tenure with Buffalo.

Ravens interviewed Hall before he was hired by Jacksonville

According to The Athletic's Jeff Zrebiec, who covers the Baltimore Ravens for the outlet, Hall interviewed for the team's vacant offensive coordinator position, though he was reportedly not given a second interview.

Persistence, work ethic and hunger gave Hall an in as an NFL coach

Hall knew that he wanted to be a coach in the league after his playing days were over.

So, a year or two later after he knew he was done as a player, Hall emailed or reached out to nearly every coach he had come in contact with. Whether that be from the Eagles, Chiefs, 49ers or Jaguars.

Though only about 50 percent of the people he reached out to responded, he didn't give up, and eventually was able to meet up with McDermott, who was with the Panthers as a defensive coordinator at the time.

McDermott coached with the eagles when Hall made the team in 2010 and after taking the Bills gig in 2017, he offered Hall a position as an offensive assistant.

“He was always a hungry player when he played. That same passion, that hunger, that burning desire when we spoke about the job when we first got to Buffalo, I noticed was there," McDermott said in 2020 via Buffalownews.com.

"Now it's what you do with the opportunity. He's a young guy who is off to a good start at this point.”
