Five things to do this week/weekend in Etowah County

Summer gives way to fall this week, but there are still plenty of activities going on in Gadsden and Etowah County. Here's a look at some of them:

Etowah County Fair

The 83rd annual Etowah County Agricultural Fair is Tuesday through Sunday at the Etowah County Fair Grounds in Attalla, with midway rides and exhibits in agriculture, gardening, cooking, quilting, art and more. Gate admission is $3 per person, in addition to armbands for rides. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon on Sunday. There is a free petting zoo and nightly entertainment. The fair is presented by the state Department of Agriculture, American Legion Post 71, the City of Attalla, Twin City Automotive, Buffalo Rock-Pepsi and Greater Gadsden Area Tourism. For more info visit Etowah County Fair Grounds on Facebook.

Taste of Northeast Alabama

Sample the offerings of restaurants, caterers and food trucks at The Venue at Coosa Landing from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday for the second Taste of Northeast Alabama. Tickets are $20 and may be be purchased by calling 256-549-4730. A portion of each ticket sold will benefit United Way of Etowah County.

Theatre of Gadsden, "Big River"

The postponed second week of "Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" is here. Performances are at 7 p.m. Tuesday, 7 p.m. Thursday and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday. Visit www.theatreofgadsden.org to check showtimes, ticket availability and to purchase tickets.

Hokes Bluff City Fest

The event kicks off with the Tawannah Lions Club breakfast for $5 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and wraps up with a performance from headliner Lorrie Morgan. In between there will be a car show — including a cruise-in and about 70 vendors, 23 of them offering food for sale — and a kid zone with six or seven free rides. Concerts start at 3 p.m. with Foggy Hollow, Tommny Shields, Congaree Bluff (Tyler Elliott and his wife) and Albert Simpson and John Kulinch, followed by the headliner. City Fest is at Hokes Bluff City Park, 3301 Alford's Bend Road.

MidSouth Marching Band Festival

The 58th annual MidSouth Marching Band Festival will bring marching bands from across the state and possibly beyond to Gadsden City High School's Titan Stadium from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. General admission tickets are $10. In addition to the high school bands, Jacksonville State University's Marching Southerners will perform at the oldest marching band festival in the Southeast.
