Five things to do this weekend: Hot Corner, Aquatic Soul Band, pro wrestling and more

Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area. Though there's never a shortage of concerts, theater and other art happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of June 9-11.

Hot Corner Gospel Extravaganza

WHERE: First African Methodist Episcopal Church (521 N. Hull St.)

WHEN: Friday, June 9 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Free admission)

DETAILS: Considered the official kick-off event for the annual Hot Corner festival, this gospel concert at the First AME Church welcomes all ages and will be putting the spotlight on choir performances this year.

Hot Corner Celebration & Soul Food Festival

WHERE: Downtown Athens (corner of Washington St. and Hull St.)

WHEN: Saturday, Jun. 10 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Free admission)

DETAILS: Hot Corner began more than 20 years ago as a block party-style festival to honor the 66 Black-owned businesses that thrived downtown from the 1950s through the 1970s and to celebrate the present and future. The event includes vendors, music performances, food, guest speakers, a car show, kids' activities and much more. Visit hotcornerathens.weebly.com to learn more.

Family Day: Juneteenth

WHERE: Georgia Museum of Art (90 Carlton St.)

WHEN: Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Free admission)

DETAILS: This pre-Juneteenth event will offer patrons and their families an educational experience prior to the national holiday on June 19. The program explores works by African American artists and features Art Cart games in the galleries. Guests can make art in the Michael and Mary Erlanger Studio Classroom to take home. Aquatic Soul Band

WHERE: Athens-Clarke County Library (2025 Baxter St.)

WHEN: Sunday, Jun. 11 at 2 p.m. (Free admission)

DETAILS: The latest event in the “Live at the Library” concert series provides a rare opportunity to see a free and early performance by Aquatic Soul, a collective of Athens-based professional musicians who play classic and modern R&B music hits from Motown, 1970s funk and beyond.

Wrestling at Southern

WHERE: Southern Brewing Company (231 Collins Ind. Blvd.)

WHEN: Saturday, Jun. 10 at 7 p.m. ($10 admission)

DETAILS: This live, family-friendly pro wrestling event stars local WWE-style fighters and Luchadors. Featured characters include Will Sampson, Machine and Brolic, with hard-hitting matches that will pit Curtis Coleman against Cuatro Cabeza, Marciano & Stevens against All-Star Special.
