The Grateful Dead was a rock band formed in 1965 in Northern California, their music fusing folk, bluegrass, jazz, psychedelic rock and more to much success.

The band’s enduring fame and contributions to music earned them a 2007 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Winterland is made up of Stacy Webster on lead guitar and vocals; Byron Stevens on bass guitar and vocals; Kevin Wulf on rhythm guitar; John Mattingly on keyboards and vocals; Sarah Nevins on vocals; Jon Wilson on drums; and Chad Slater-Scott on drums and vocals.

All members are from Iowa, playing over 9 years and over 185 shows, Dan Zehr, a representative for the band, told the Press-Citizen in an email.

‘A Mentor’s Gift’ and ‘Collectivity is Flux’ at Public Space One

A joint exhibit centered on printmaking is now on display at Public Space One through early January.

Cory Christiansen is the artist behind “A Mentor’s Gift,” a show in memory of his friend and mentor, Jon Fasanelli-Cawelti.

Fasanelli-Cawelti was a Muscatine artist and master printmaker who practiced the printmaking method intaglio in which a person will incise an image onto the surface of plate such as copper or aluminum. The ink collects into the incisions and is printed on a paper by applying pressure.

His work, two of his books and a rare video of him explaining the process can be viewed at the exhibit.

Part of “A Mentor’s Gift” invites viewers to try their hand at printmaking, regardless of previous experience or skill level.

Laid across Public Space One’s floor are a series of stations and tools with instructions all for the purpose of learning printmaking. For example, viewers can make indentations on plates or use electric engravers to produce their own design on a plate.

On Dec. 27 and 28, people are invited to pull a print from one of the plates at the Iowa City Press Co-op located next door.

Also on display is “Collectivity is Flux,” which displays prints by over a dozen artists.

The two exhibits will be on display at Public Space One’s 229 N. Gilbert St. location through Jan. 6 during the hours 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

Visit Public Space One’s website for more information.
