Five towns host shows for the first Middlesex County Jazz Festival

Edison, Metuchen, New Brunswick, Perth Amboy and Woodbridge are coming together to create the first Middlesex County Jazz Festival, a free weekend of performances from Thursday, Sept. 28, to Sunday, Oct. 1.

The rain-or-shine event, funded by a $20,000 grant from the Middlesex County Cultural and Arts Trust Fund, is expected to attract more than 10,000 people.

“We wanted to continue to expand jazz in our towns, so in creating this event we are one step closer to making that happen,” said Michael Tublin, co-founder of New Brunswick Jazz Project and the Middlesex County Jazz Festival.

New Brunswick was a part of the Central Jersey Jazz Festival for nearly a decade, and Metuchen joined the CJJF in 2021. That festival took place Sept. 8 to 10 in Somerville and Flemington.

Victor Quezada and his Latin jazz band will perform in Edison.

“It just wasn’t a good fit since we wouldn’t have been able to add five towns [to the Central Jersey Jazz Festival],” Tublin said. “We wanted to see a bigger, more robust lineup … We hope to see the Central Jersey Jazz Festival pick up another town or two themselves.”
