Five-vehicle crash in Ashland County leaves one dead, four injured

JACKSON TWP. – A five-vehicle crash in Ashland County has left a Lorain County woman dead and four others injured.

According to a news release from the Highway Patrol, the Wednesday evening accident happened at U.S. Route 42 and state Route 89 around 6:49 p.m. when a 2013 Honda CR-V traveling south on Route 89 failed to stop at the intersection.

The driver, Christine R. Smith, 70, of Wellington, was pronounced dead at University Hospitals Samaritan Medical Center.

Smith's vehicle collided with a Chevrolet Trax traveling northeast on Route 42, the release states. The driver, 44-year-old Kimberly D. Willis of Ashland, was taken to UH Samaritan with serious injuries.

Both vehicles struck two Honda motorcycles and a Suzuki SX4, which were all stopped at the intersection, according to troopers.

The drivers of those vehicles, Kathern I. Bray, 40, of Jeromesville, Roger D. Williamson, 49, and Andrew D. Williamson, 29, both of West Salem, were each taken to UH Samaritan with injuries that are not life-threatening, the release states.

Alcohol and drugs are not considered to be factors in the crash, according to the patrol.

The Ashland County Sheriff's Office, Nankin/Orange Township Fire and EMS, Polk Township Fire and EMS and the Ohio Department of Transportation assisted.

The crash remains under investigation.
