OTTAWA LAKE -- The Monroe County Veterans Affairs Department and Whiteford Township officials will hold a flag-raising ceremony Saturday at the Whiteford Veterans Memorial located next to the Whiteford Township Fire Station in Ottawa Lake.

The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the station, 8440 Brown St. Local officials will raise a new flag to replace an older flag. The new flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., and was donated by U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

State Rep. TC Clements, R-Temperance, will give some brief remarks and an honor guard from the Dundee Veterans of Foreign Wars will provide colors for the event. Rob Kull, veterans’ affairs counselor for the county, is organizing the ceremony.

The memorial was dedicated on Aug. 23, 1947, in memory of local soldiers who gave their lives for their country.

Kull has headed the department since July when he succeeded Kathy Vanderbush, who retired. A 2004 graduate of Jefferson High School, he served in the Navy from 2009-2014 and is currently a member of the Michigan Army National Guard.
