Flagler Beach wins award for recycling machine

A central Florida beach community won an award for its recycling machine.

The City of Flagler Beach designed “Big Blue” to recycle glass into sand and gravel, which can be used for other things, like sandbags.

According to a release, the city unveiled the machine on Earth Day in 2022.

Mayor Suzie Johnson said the community had recycled more than 12 tons of glass a week with the Big Blue.

Flagler Beach Sanitation Director Rob Smith organized the project and accepted the award for the city’s efforts.

He said he wanted to be part of the initiative because recycling glass can save natural resources.

“It’s wonderful for our city to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem,” Smith said.
