Flames Consume Trees in New Mexico as Wildfires Expand Over 259,000 Acres
The Calf Canyon and Hermit Peak fires had grown to a combined 259,810 acres in northern New Mexico by Thursday, May 12, officials said, as residents of four counties were told to “remain on high alert” for road closures or orders to evacuate.
The US Forest Service said they were expecting “extreme fire behavior and rapid growth, especially to the north,” amid unfavorable weather conditions.
“Residents of San Miguel, Mora, Taos, and Colfax counties should remain on high alert for changes to evacuation statuses and road closures,” they added.
