Residents displaced after flames rip through Butler apartment building

Families are left picking up the pieces after a fire at an apartment building in Butler Monday.

Video from a Channel 11 viewer shows flames shooting through the roof. Residents of the building tell us the fire started in an upstairs unit.

“I just heard some popping and the smoke alarm going off. I went outside to check what was going on and [saw] smoke coming out the apartment,” Alfred Irvin said. He lives in the unit below.

“My daughter actually saw the smoke out of her window, which is diagonal to number 4. She heard the alarms first and said ‘Mom, we gotta leave. There’s a fire,’” Marissa Claypoole said.

Despite significant damage, no people were hurt. Residents tell Channel 11 some cats died, including Marissa’s daughter’s kitten.

“I have no roof on the upstairs. My daughter’s whole room is burnt and smoke-damaged,” Claypoole said.

“My apartment is destroyed. The roof caved in from water,” Irvin said. “Just glad we survived.”

The Red Cross was on scene helping residents. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
