Flash flooding closes part of I-86 Monday, disrupting travel between Horseheads and Elmira

UPDATE: As of Tuesday afternoon, New York State Police reported all lanes had reopened to traffic on Interstate Highway 86.

A section of Interstate Highway 86, between Horseheads and Elmira, was shut down at about 12:30 p.m. Monday, closed due to flooding caused by heavy rain that hit the area.

According to New York State Police, Chemung County Sheriff's Office and law enforcement personnel from all local agencies in the area are currently blocking off parts of the highway and the exits that lead to the flooded road.

Sections of I-86 are closed between exit 54 and 56, between Horseheads and Elmira, troopers said. No crashes have been reported from the flooded section of I-86 as of early Monday afternoon and currently there is no timeline for the road to be reopened.

Officials said the New York State Department of Transportation is also currently at the site.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for central Chemung County and southeast Steuben County Monday, with thunderstorms producing heavy rain.

Some locations expected to experience flash flooding included Elmira, Corning, West Elmira, Southport, Big Flats, Horseheads, Elmira Heights, Caton, Erin, South Corning, Horseheads North, Pine City, Breesport, East Corning, Lockwood, Fisherville, Mark Twain State Park, Tompkins Corners, Newtown Battlefield State Park and Webb Mills, according to the National Weather Service.
