Flash flooding, storms hit Australia's east coast

STORY: The northeastern New South Wales and southeastern Queensland regions were pounded by a wild weather system overnight, with several towns taking roughly a month's rainfall over 24 hours to Monday (January 1) morning.

“If you're in parts of Queensland, receiving torrential rain at the moment, the best thing you can do is stay at home and stay off our roads," said Cameron Dick, the deputy premier of Queensland.

More heavy rain was forecast on Tuesday morning, with totals set to exceed 9.8 inches, more than the January average.
